Baby born after mum dies in tower block fall receiving 'critical care'

A newborn baby is in critical condition after their mother fell from a tower block in Leeds.

Emergency services were called to the 17-storey tower block in Burmantofts on the morning of Tuesday, October 22 after a heavily pregnant woman fell "from a height".

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed the force was called to Shakespeare Towers, in Shakespeare Approach at around 10.24am by Yorkshire Ambulance Service. Paramedics has been called after a woman "in the late stage of pregnancy" fell from the apartment block.

The woman, in her 30s, died at the scene. The woman's baby was delivered at hospital where they are in a critical condition.

The force spokesman said: " At 10.24am today, police were contacted by the ambulance service who had been called to an incident where a woman had fallen from height at .

"The woman died at the scene as result of her injuries.

"There were no suspicious circumstances and the Coroner’s Office has been informed.

"The woman, aged in her thirties, was in the late stage of pregnancy and her baby was delivered at hospital after the incident and is receiving critical care."

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Ambulance resources responded to an incident at Shakespeare Towers, Leeds, on Tuesday morning (22 October) where a female had fallen from height. Sadly, the woman died at the scene as a result of the injuries she sustained."
