The opening of a new LGBTQ+ nightclub has been hailed as a boost to London’s vibrant nightlife and culture by the capital’s night czar.

Baby Bull, the team behind Soho nightspot Circa, is launching a venue in Hungerford House, next to Embankment Tube station.

The team wants to transform the property into an LGBTQ+ nightclub in the basement, with an all-day drinking and dining space on the ground floor.

It comes after research found more than half of London’s LGBTQ+ pubs, clubs and music venues have closed since 2006. The number of venues has fallen from 53 from 125, a loss of nearly 60 per cent, according to an audit last year by the Urban Laboratory at University College London. Hungerford House, a former electricity generating station, is owned by Transport for London.

Amy Lamé, London’s night czar, said: “The Mayor and I are clear that LGBT+ venues are a fundamental part of London’s vibrant nightlife and culture.

“I’m delighted that Hungerford House will soon be throwing open its doors as London’s newest LGBT+ venue.”

Alan Winter, Circa’s owner and founder, said: “After working on the London gay scene for over a decade and witnessing its slow decline, I am very proud and excited that Circa is here to say that the London LGBTQ+ scene is far from over.”
