Baby Giraffe Seen Kicking in Mom's Belly in Toronto Zoo's #ClosedButStillCaring Update

The Toronto Zoo is keeping patrons updated on the lives of its animals amid the COVID-19 pandemic, sharing an eye-popping video of a baby giraffe kicking in its mother’s belly on March 24. The baby’s due date was about three weeks away.

The zoo tweeted the footage using the hashtag #ClosedButStillCaring, and it shows resident Masai giraffe Mstari’s entire midsection twitching as her unborn calf moves around. The average newborn giraffe weighs 100 to 150 pounds, according to pbs.org.

According to the zoo, Mstari is due to give birth in mid-April, after a 15-month gestation period. Credit: Toronto Zoo via Storyful
