Baby girl dies after dog attack at home with animal 'destroyed'

A seven-month-old baby girl has died after being attacked by a dog. The youngster was at a property in Coventry when she was bitten.

She was rushed to hospital but could not be saved. The dog, which was not to have been classed as a dangerous breed, was taken by police and humanely destroyed.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "A baby has tragically died after being bitten by a pet dog at a home in Coventry. We were called to a property at Shorncliffe Road shortly after 3pm on Sunday. Together with our ambulance colleagues we arrived within minutes.

"A seven-month-old baby girl had received serious injuries to her head after being bitten by the family's dog inside the home. She received treatment at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to hospital for further treatment.

"Tragically, she died a short time later. Our thoughts remain with her family at this devastating time.

"The pet dog, which isn’t classed as a dangerous breed, was removed from the home on Sunday and humanely destroyed."

Police are now investigating the circumstances which led to the incident. The spokesperson said police are in the early stages of their investigation and enquiries are continuing.
