Scottish names are a very popular choice for soon-to-be or seasoned parents wondering what moniker to bestow upon their child. From Isla to Angus, people the world over turn to Scots for inspiration when they are expecting.

However, a recent Reddit thread shone light on what Scottish names were being banded about as suggestions for those seeking the perfect title for their little ones.

According to the poster, Scottish names for girls were shared by Nameberry - the world's largest website devoted to baby names. The site claims to be created by experts and positions itself as "the leader in naming names".

Some of those names for the bonnie wee lassies among us raised eyebrows, though. One in particular, named after a certain Scottish city, caused uproar. The name? Aberdeen.

Reddit users didn't hold back. One commented: "Aberdeen????" while another responded: "I know. Of all of the cities... they chose Aberdeen."

A third chimed in: "Most of these are acceptable names... but, er, Wiley? Ruskin? Aberdeen? Paisley? Some of these are just what happens when someone jabs a stubby digit at a map of Scotland and say "I'll take it!"

A fourth gave their view: "The boy names are mostly defensible, albeit not necessarily current in actual Scottish maternity wards, but then you swipe on to the girl list and... what?!"

A fifth suggested some hilarious alternatives, writing: "Bathgate, Sporran, Dreich, Ecclefechan, Messages, Tartan, Bawbag, Jacobite, Weegie, Pish, Doric, Quaich, Highlander, Thistle, Oor Wullie and Yer Granny's Tablet Recipe.

"All traditional names. Please pick one and enrich your child's existence."

Other names on the list didn't spark such a visceral reaction like Ainsley, Bonnie, Eileen, Iona, and Catriona, which may have rose to prominence following the award-winning Starz series Outlander starring Caitríona Balfe.

On the boy's list, the selection was a lot tamer, too, with Alasdair, Fraser, Fergus, and Lachlan making the cut. More out there rankings were Wiley, Kester, and Ruskin.

"Scot here," one user added. "Most of those names might have been acceptable up till about 70 years ago. Some are still used today, but are often considered "old people" names."
