Baby Quokka Not Ready to Accept It's Outgrown Momma's Pouch
A videographer visiting Rottnest Island in October captured the adorable moment when a young quokka tried really hard to climb into its mother’s pouch, despite all the evidence that it had outgrown it.
Video by Dylan deHaas shows the little marsupial repeatedly diving head first into the pouch. The mother hops away, even as the determined youngster’s head remains inside.
Quokkas are often referred to as the world’s happiest animals, and are endemic to the island. They are well-known for pausing in pictures with visitors.
DeHaas told Storyful that he and his wife Sarah wanted to go somewhere special, as it was their first time away from their daughter since she was born earlier this year.
“They are just the cutest animals!” he said about the little marsupials. “Always looking like they are smiling.” Credit: Dylan deHaas via Storyful

- I think the baby is a little bit big for the pouch.
- Oh my God, he's getting in.
- He's trying to. He's trying to.
- Oh my God, he's getting in. Are you filming this?
- Yeah. I don't think he'll fit. There's another way in there.
- Is there? I think he's too big.
