Bad night for European giants as Bayern Munich, Juventus and Barcelona handed humbling defeats

Bayern Munich were thrashed 5-0 by Borussia Monchengladbach as several giants of European football fell to defeats on Wednesday night.

A first-choice line-up was obliterated in the third-round of the DfB-Pokal, Bayern conceding five in one game for the first time since 2012.

Kouadio Kone struck after just 80 seconds following an error from Alphonso Davies and braces from Ramy Bensebaini and Breel Embolo sealed the historic hammering.

Bayern had romped to three successive wins, scoring 13 goals, with coach Julian Nagelsmann out of action due to Covid-19 and assistant Dino Topmoeller on the touchline.

But the Bavarians were far from the only big hitters humbled as Barcelona sank to another defeat, this time away to Rayo Vallecano.

Veteran forward Radamel Falcao hit the only goal at Vallecas to leave Ronald Koeman’s side ninth in LaLiga - yet only six points off the top after Osasuna held Real Madrid to a 0-0 draw.

The defeat led to Koeman’s dismissal from the Camp Nou, the Dutchman having said post-match: “I don’t know if my future is in danger.”

One man not at the threat of the sack is Pep Guardiola, following Manchester City’s defeat to West Ham.

A fourth-consecutive Carabao Cup trophy for the Spaniard proved one too many after a 5-3 penalty shootout defeat followed a 0-0 draw in 90 minutes. Phil Foden missed the decisive penalty at London Stadium.

Juventus Run Ends

Paulo Dybala’s late penalty in the Derby d’Italia with Inter Milan in midweek extended Juventus’ unbeaten run to nine games but it was the Old Lady who were hit with a sucker punch on Wednesday.

Weston McKennie’s powerful header appeared to have rescued the Bianconeri after Sassuolo led at the break in Serie A.

Yet, while chasing a winner of their own, Juventus were countered on and conceded a 95th-minute goal to Maxime Lopez.

"There are games that if you don't win you can't afford to lose," Allegri told DAZN in Turin. "We have to be realistic. We have to play in another way and be more careful, especially if you meet teams like Sassuolo."
