The calculation is proving so difficult, social media users can't agree on the answer. While it'll certainly push you to think outside the box, taking on brainteasers like this can bolster your brain's ability to focus, as well as improve memory and overall cognitive skills.

Even those who pride themselves on their arithmetic skills are scratching their heads over this test question. So, do you reckon you can crack it?

The puzzle, posted to Threads, goes like this: "Divide 40 by 1/2 and add 15. What did you get?"

The question has drawn more than 394,000 views as would-be mathematicians try to solve it.

You might be tempted to solve the conundrum by dividing 40 by 1/2, or 0.5, giving 80. Then when you add 15 you get 95. Alternatively, some might interpret it as dividing 40 by its half, which is 20, resulting in two, and then adding 15 to get 17.

Then there's the interpretation that involves halving 40 to get 20, and then adding 15 to reach a total of 35 – it is as much a question of semantics as it is maths.

One individual responded: "I see how the question can get y'all to think 35, it almost got me. But, to divide a fraction, remember you need to flip into the reciprocal. Once you have your reciprocal, the order of operations changes to multiplication. 40 divided by 1/2 =80 + 15 = 95. This is slightly easier to remember than dividing by .5! ".

Another chimed in: "First thought: 40/20=2+15=17, Second thought: 40/2=20+15=35, Third thought: 40/.5=80+15=95. All answers are correct just depends on how u think."

But some insisted the solution was clear-cut. A commenter asserted: "It's not a poorly written question, it's a poorly READ question."
