Bag Of Chemicals Found In Trafalgar Square

A church in London's Trafalgar Square was evacuated after industrial strength chemicals were found in a bag nearby.

Firefighters were called to the scene, close to St Martin-in-the-Fields, at around 8.30am.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus inspected the bag, which was found to contain the hazardous material.

Station manager Sam Kazmanli, who attended the scene, said: "Firefighters used detection and monitoring equipment to find out what chemicals were involved.

"We found that the bag contained industrial strength chemical granules inside."

The contents were double bagged and removed by the London Ambulance Service's specialist Hazardous Area Response Team (HART).

"Around 20 people were evacuated from the church as a precaution," he added.

The church later tweeted to thank London Ambulance and London Fire Brigade for their "great response", adding: "The church has reopened and all is well."
