Watch: RuPaul’s Drag Race Queen Baga Chipz reveals her tips on how to master your confidence
While it may seem that drag queens have confidence and the ability to contour in equally large measures, it’s not always the case!
Speaking on this week’s episode of Reality Check, Baga Chipz, Vinegar Strokes and Blu Hydrangea opened up about feeling confident – and whether you have to fake it to make it.
Blu admitted that until her appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, she didn’t have a lot of confidence.
“Watching myself back on Drag Race, it's like a completely different person,” she said.
“I almost can't watch it. I'm so naive, so shy, but then something hit me. Then I was a frock destroyer - and now look at me now!”
Listen: Baga, Blu and Vinegar talk about how to handle negative comments
Recalling her time on the show, Blu said that the other larger than life personalities on the show knocked her confidence.
“I am someone that really compares myself to other people but as soon as I hit that work room, I shut down because I was seeing a lot of big personalities,” she stated.
She continued: “As the show goes on, though, you kind of land on your feet and you realise that for that kind of situation, you're going to have to let all your inhibitions go. It is a journey.”
Blu wasn’t the only one to be nervous. Baga said that she originally found the other contestants slightly overwhelming, but she was determined to be herself, while Vinegar, despite appearing on the West End stage, admitted that she had a particular fear!
“I was like, ‘Don't fall over!’” she laughed.
“The last thing I wanted to do was fall over. I had this big fear that if I go over, the whole world's ended. I didn't fall over, said my line and I could breathe after that.”
Embracing your nerves and learning from your past are just some of the tips on confidence our reality queens share on this week’s episode. Here are a few more.
Find things you love about yourself
Blu, who said the best part about appearing on RuPaul’s Drag Race, was the fact she has seen herself grow, believes confidence comes from finding things you really like about yourself.
“I love my massive, big, thick, juicy… heart,” she joked, going on to say how much her creativity has helped her find confidence.
“Just shower yourself with love, smile into the mirror and tell yourself that you're great,” she advises.
Look after yourself
Self-care is a really important part of finding inner confidence. Not only does taking care of yourself create positive feelings, but it can also boost your self-esteem. It’s something Vinegar makes sure she does regularly.
“I always kind of spend at least one time a week where I treat myself,” she told Baga and Blu.
“I will go out to see a show. I'll go out to dinner or I'll go shopping for myself, but I always take a good day or half a day where I can just treat myself. I'm not worried about someone else. And I feel great after that!”
Turn your phone off every day for one hour
With a combined Instagram following of 812,000, Baga, Vinegar and Blu are only too aware how much social media can take over your life.
Negative comments can destroy confidence – in fact, one report found that 60% of people using social media reported that it had impacted their self-esteem in a negative way.
Baga though has a simple way to combat this!
“Turn your phone off for one hour,” she states. “If you can do this for a day, then you've got a decent life. If you can't do this for a day, then there's something wrong. Just a day.
“You want to be on your own sometimes and have no distractions. Even if you've got a boyfriend, even if you live with family - sometimes you just want to be left alone for a couple of hours.”
