Travellers have been told some perhaps surprising items they should never put in their suitcase. Some things which should not be packed are more well known, like aerosols and lithium batteries.

But food items can cause real problems if put into checked luggage. A baggage handler has now spoken out, issuing a plea to holidaymakers on Reddit.

Food can be an issue but alcohol can cause some of the biggest issues. The worker explained: "They rot, break or leak, open. It smells, especially alcohol. Then I smell all day after picking up a bag that leaked."

The same goes for fragrances anyone grabbing a bottle at duty-free should ensure it's securely sealed to prevent any in-transit accidents, reports the Express. Medications are another important consideration; while it might feel responsible to tuck them away in checked bags, this is actually a bad idea.

For those who depend on medication, the advice is clear: keep it in your carry-on so you can get to it when needed and avoid the disaster of losing it if your checked baggage wanders off. If you're jetting off for a festive break, be mindful of the Christmas items you pack.

Despite being a staple at any Christmas dinner, crackers are a no-go on planes due to their tiny amount of gunpowder. And if you're hoping to bring some high-strength spirits along for the ride, think again. Any alcohol over 70 percent, including grain alcohol and 151-proof rum, is banned from both checked and carry-on luggage.
