When you're gearing up for an international holiday, the checklist can seem endless - passport, insurance, flight schedules, and security checks.

Amidst the pre-holiday rush, it's tempting to chuck everything into your suitcase without a second thought. However, seasoned travellers warn there are a few items you should never pack in your luggage.

Beyond the obvious things like aerosols and lithium batteries, even something as simple as food can wreak havoc for baggage handlers, the Express reports.

A baggage handler has taken to Reddit to implore holidaymakers to avoid stowing food in their hold luggage. Their plea was clear: "They rot, break or leak, open. It smells, especially alcohol. Then I smell all day after picking up a bag that leaked."

The handler also pointed out that perfumes and colognes are culprits of similar chaos. They advised ensuring any duty-free fragrances are securely wrapped to prevent any unfortunate accidents.

Another surprising item to keep out of your checked bags is medication. While it might seem safer there, if you rely on any meds, it's crucial to carry them in your hand luggage.

This way, they're readily available when needed and safe from being lost should your checked bags go astray.

If you're jetting off for a festive break, be mindful of the Christmas items you pack. Despite their small size and holiday dinner staple status, Christmas crackers are not allowed on planes due to the tiny amount of gunpowder they contain.

Also, if you're hoping to bring some high-strength spirits with you, remember that anything over 70 percent alcohol, including grain alcohol and 151-proof rum, is prohibited in both checked and hand luggage. So, it's best to leave the strong stuff at home.
