It might be a harmless and cuddly affair on paper, but The Great British Bake Off has its fair share of controversy – even this year's exceptionally pure series.

Yes, we're of course talking about the divisive final twist, where the three remaining bakers were tasked with cooking beyond the realms of the hallowed tent.

One of this year's finalists Ruby Bhogal has, however, spoken out in defence of the surprise barbeque task, admitting to Vulture that she "absolutely loved it".

"I saw on social media that people weren’t thrilled, and I understand how some people didn’t think it was traditional baking," she conceded, "[but] I thought it was great.

"Leading up to that last weekend, the entire experience had been bonkers. Of course they’ll have to do something ridiculous on the final weekend!"

Ruby did blame the location change on slimming her chances of out victory, however, which eventually went to the nation's newest sweetheart Rahul Mandal.

"Would I have fared better if I was back in the tent? Probably. But it was so much fun. That entire hour and a half someone was either yelling, 'It’s so hot!' or 'How am I doing!?'"

Fortunately for Bake Off purists, this year's Christmas special will be taking place in the tent and the tent only.

The Great Christmas Bake Off will air at 8pm on Channel 4 on Christmas Day, and The Great New Year's Bake Off will air at 7.40pm on Channel 4 on New Year's Day.
