'Bake Off' week 7: No one can work out what festival week means and a show favourite leaves the tent

Continuing in the vein of Great British Bake Off themes that can only loosely be related to baking is “festival week” - because who amongst us hasn’t been to Glastonbury and immediately thought “I must visit the Victoria sponge tent”?

The themes have been getting more random by the week, and this one really confused viewers. Remember when the options were cake, bread, biscuits, pastry, possibly chocolate week for a bit of excitement?

Oh, ok...not that sort of festival. Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith were of course referring to festivals such as Eid, Hanukkah, Christmas, that sort of thing.

Still, we all got a good laugh out of the not exactly unexpected news that the only festival Henry has ever been to is a book festival.

But who was the headline act, and whose cracker was missing its bang? Sorry, we’re still a little confused about exactly what type of festival we’re talking about.

Get out your party hats and confetti cannons: it’s week seven of The Great British Bake Off.

The Signature Bake

Festival buns were on the menu for the first challenge and the bakers had to make a yeasted dough - think hot cross buns, which a good number of them did.

Paul did his usual contestant psych out by trying to make Michael doubt whether he had his ingredient measurements right, simply by raising a silver eyebrow.

Despite Paul trying to throw him off, Michael was on fire with the innuendos this episode - covering his cracks with some leaves, rolling his balls around on the bench, rubbing his buns, and, er, this...

We’re down to the last six bakers now, and things are really hotting up in the kitchen as not one, but two of them achieved Hollywood Handshakes in this round.

The lucky contestants were resident Star Baker Steph, and a very shocked Henry who ruined it for himself by blurting out “shut up!” to Paul in surprise.

Paul got his own back by the end of the episode, though.

Who won the Technical Challenge?

We headed for Sicily in the Technical this week with the delicious-looking cassatelle, which are crescent-shaped pastries filled with ricotta, chocolate and orange.

Horrors for Michael, who had to face down his worst enemy in the tent - the deep fat fryer which reduced him to tears in the beignet task a couple of weeks ago.

Michael was much more chilled about fryer disasters this time though, even when his pastries started bursting open, and it was Alice who had the real meltdown over the tricky piece of equipment.

Pretty much every one of her cassatelles burst open, leaving her in last place.

The challenge also involved chaos with a pasta machine and much bemusement over having to sieve cheese.

We really thought this might finally be David’s week to win the round, but as he said himself, “I repel first”.

He landed in second place again, leaving the way open for a delighted Rosie to grab the top spot.

The Showstoppers

The judges and presenters used their pre-Showstopper deliberations for some shared love of David, with Noel Fielding calling him “neat as a pin” and Sandi Toksvig acknowledging “very nice buns” as Paul and Prue nodded their agreement.

However, as far as the viewers were concerned, there was one question about David on everyone’s lips.

But back to the baking - whose kek lapis Sarawak would prove worthy?

Viewers unfamiliar with the Malaysian celebratory bake were in for a visual treat with the intricate, colourful designs, but it was less of a treat challenge for the bakers who had the stressful task of producing them.

Even Paul admitted: “This is one of the hardest cake designs to make.” Eek!

Every day’s a school day with teacher Alice, and this week she learned that she’s an Essex girl, which we did not see coming. Cameo on TOWIE, Alice?

Sometimes, we watch Bake Off and think, yeah, we might have a go at making that over the weekend. Not so with the kek lapis Sarawak, especially when poor Rosie burnt hers during the cake grilling stage and had to start all over again. We were even less keen when they all got out rulers and started stressing over maths and measurements. Not for us, thanks.

The results were truly incredible, though, and even the creations that got a slating from the judges looked like absolute works of art to us amateurs.

Alice in particular really pulled things back for herself, but while we thought David’s cake was one of the most stunning things we’ve seen on the show, the judges definitely felt that size mattered and complained that it was much too tiny.

Who won Star Baker?

Shut up!

That’s right, Henry got his first Star Baker - and the fans could not be more delighted for him.

So Henry goes through to the semi-finals, but which unlucky baker is not joining him?

Who was sent home?

Scenes of devastation as fan favourite Michael finally ran out of luck and was sent home for his stodgy kek lapis Sarawak and exploded cassatelles.

It was a fair cop this week as Michael definitely struggled the most, but that didn’t make us any less devastated.

A good few viewers sobbed along with Michael as he shed his final tears on the show.

The Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
