Yahoo News 'Bake Off's' Terry Hartill thanks fans for support in heartbreaking letter
Great British Bake Off contestant Terry Hartill – who left in the fifth week – has thanked fans for their support while he was on the show, which came after the death of his wife.
In a handwritten note shared on the Bake Off’s official Twitter, he said: “I would like to express a massive thank you to everybody who has supported me and my family over the last few months.
“We are so overwhelmed by the huge response we have received and I am particularly grateful for all your kind words online and on social media.
“It has been a difficult time since the loss of my wife and when my daughter applied for the show on my behalf we never could have expected the wonderful reaction that we have experienced and continue to receive.
“In the tent it was tough and difficult at times (a melting Eiffel Tower for example). I thank you all for seeing the vision!
“But it has been so very enjoyable and I have made some wonderful lifelong friends. I am very excited for the future and again would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for their love and encouragement. Yours, Terry.”

Hartill’s wife, Joanna, died in April 2017 aged 52, after a ten-month battle with cancer.
GBBBO fans were unsurprisingly touched by Hartill’s words. With almost 1,000 replies as of Tuesday afternoon, one fan replied to the tweet with “That moment when you read Terry from #GBBO ‘s letter, and want to hug him all over again,” and another remarked that his handwriting was beautiful and poked fun at his failed Eiffel Tower bake.
“Even his handwriting is beautiful. Oh, bless you Terry, may you have a bright future! (writing from France, we’re not mad about the melted Eiffel Tower 😉 ) x.”
Tonight will see the Great British Bake Off finalists of 2018 compete in the series finale. Kim-Joy, Rahul Mandal or Ruby Bhogal will be named this year’s winner as they compete outside of the tent for the very first time.
