‘Bananas Grow On Trees’ And Other Myths Brits Believe Are True

image

Brits seemingly believe in a lot of things that just simply aren’t true - including the notion that bananas actually grow on trees.

In fact, the banana myth is the most commonly held misconception held by millions of us, according to a new survey.

But bananas are actually plants, officially classified as perennial herbs.

Second in the survey’s list of myths we hold to be true is that we have five senses, while three in ten of us think aliens exist - with one in ten claiming to have actually seen one.

The same amount of people believe the Yeti - or ‘Abominable Snowman - prowls the Himalayas and one in five Scots insist the Loch Ness monster is real.

The 'hit or myth’ survey of 2,000 UK adults was conducted by Ripley’s Believe it or Not! London.

A spokesman said: “Myths are interesting things to read about, and we’ll always encourage people to learn more about them.

"But it’s fascinating to see that many Brits believe they’ve witnessed an alien spacecraft and are open to the idea that 'Bigfoot’ is real.

"The weird and wonderful is something that should never be discounted as it’s even more exciting when you find out that they’re true.”

Other, more believable myths are that Napoleon was short - when in truth he was five foot seven inches tall - quite lofty for the time.

And Vikings probably didn’t actually wear helmets with horns, despite what films and fancy dress costumes may tell you.

Alarmingly, some people still question whether the Moon landing really happened while others think Elvis Presley is in fact still alive - although the King will never die.
