Exciting news, Bancroft fans – a second series WILL be happening.

The four-part ITV murder mystery, which stars Broadchurch's Sarah Parish, hooked viewers when it premiered over the Christmas period last year.

Now, it's been officially confirmed that the show will return for the four-part Bancroft II, with the episodes set to see detective Elizabeth Bancroft's past coming back to haunt her.

Although her crime figures are down and she's popular at work – even getting promoted to Detective Chief Superintendent – a dangerous pact with a crime boss and estrangement from her son Joe mean that success comes at a price for Bancroft.

When Joe gets dragged into the middle of a double murder investigation unexpectedly, Bancroft takes action to protect him – but in turn, that puts her at risk from someone who show bosses are describing as "a chilling new antagonist".

The new Bancroft episodes will be written by creator Kate Brooke, who described the character as "a woman we love and loathe in equal measure", adding that "the repercussions of her past actions will come back to bit her in ways she could never have expected".

"That the audience took to Elizabeth Bancroft in all her terrible, distorted glory in such numbers is fantastic," added Catherine Oldfield, who's executive producer for Tall Story Pictures.

"Kate has loads of brilliant twists and turns in store for this new series, and I can't wait to see what Sarah and the cast do with them."

The first series left fans slightly frustrated with its final outcome, and also gave viewers one final twist of events.

However, Bancroft drew in impressive ratings with an average of 6.7 million viewers for ITV, so a second outing hardly seems a surprise.

Expect returns from Parish as Bancroft and Game of Thrones' Faye Marsay as Detective Sergeant Katherine Stevens in Bancroft II.

The second series will go into production later this year, so we imagine we won't see it until mid-to-late 2019 at the earliest.

Bancroft airs on ITV.
