Police checks at a Nuneaton school led to a number of banned items being seized. Officers went to Higham Lane School today (November 13) with 'search wands'.

These were used to look for banned items and while the teams said they did not find anything 'alarming', they did seize a number of vapes. The checks were made as part of the ongoing 'Operation Sceptre'.

This is a national operation aimed at not only tackling knife crime, but also raising awareness about it. Information sessions have been held for year six students at other schools across the town throughout this week where Nuneaton Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) officers have spoken about the dangers and consequences of carrying knives.

News about the action in schools comes as a knife bin is due to be set-up outside Bedworth Police Station tomorrow night (November 14). Locals are being urged to drop off any knives with, as police say, 'no questions asked.'

Sergeant Chris Studd from Bedworth SNT explained: "During Operation Sceptre week we do lot of work in the local community to raise awareness of the dangers of carrying a knife. Nothing good ever comes from carrying a knife and we have tragically seen the consequences of this in the local area recently.

"On Thursday evening we will have the knife surrender bin outside Bedworth Police Station. You can come and surrender a knife anonymously, no questions asked. Every knife surrendered is on less off the streets."

The knife bin will be in place outside the station between 6.30pm until 8pm and people can discard unwanted knives or surrender any illegal knives safely and anonymously.

Anyone with any concerns about someone carrying a knife can report is anonymously through Fearless at crimestoppers-uk.org/fearless or on 0800 555 111.
