Baptiste viewers were left frustrated and confused by tonight's season finale (March 24), thanks to an unsolved mystery and some rather curious time-jumping.

The characteristically bleak final episode of the BBC crime thriller revealed Julien's long-lost son Niels to be the police mole working for the Brigada Serbulu.

However, viewers didn't seem to be too shocked by the revelation after Julien uncovered surveillance footage of Niels arranging Kim's murder.

What perhaps came as a greater surprise was the death of Niels' mother Martha, whom he accidentally shot and killed in a final stand-off with the police before being taken into custody.

Getting to this dramatic conclusion proved to be quite the struggle for viewers, however, as the final scenes of the episode saw the story inexplicably jump forward two months into the future, only the recount the events of Niels' final shoot-out via flashback.

Another flashback also revealed that Cristina, the girl who had been kidnapped by sex traffickers, was never found. Julien arrived at a derelict building where various other girls were being held captive, but he was too late – she'd already been sold on.

Having followed the six-part series in hope of seeing Cristina's case resolved, some viewers were left disappointed that they'd potentially have to wait for a second season (if it ends up being confirmed) to find out what happened to her.

Baptiste airs on BBC One.
