Barbara Sinatra, the wife of Frank Sinatra, has died aged 90.

The former model and fourth wife of the hugely successful singer died on Tuesday at her home in California.

Her health had been declining for months and she died comfortably surrounded by her family and friends at home, a director of one of her charitable foundations said.

She is believed to have died of natural causes.

Mrs Sinatra was Frank Sinatra’s wife for 22 years until he died in 1998 from a heart attack.

The former Las Vegas showgirl and socialite married Sinatra in 1976.

In her 2011 memoir called "Lady Blue Eyes: My Life with Frank", Mrs Sinatra detailed how she first met the My Way singer when he was with his second wife Ava Gardner.

She had spent time at Frank Sinatra's home while she was married to his neighbour, comedy brother Zeppo Marx.

Mrs Sinatra went on to use her fame for massive charity efforts, including founding the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Centre in 1986, which provides support and counselling for abused children.

Legendary actor and singer Frank Sinatra is often considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
