Former EastEnders star Barbara Windsor has explained why she never had children, as she opened up about the biggest regrets of her life.

The acting favourite – known for her iconic role as Peggy Mitchell – is the subject of a new documentary drama titled Babs, which is due to air on BBC One this weekend.

Babs will examine Barbara's huge rise to fame, and the darker side of her life – including her difficult relationship with her father and ex-husband Ronnie Knight.

Ahead of the screening for the BBC biopic, Barbara opened up about her personal life – explaining why she decided not to have kids.

"I consider myself to be a warm and lovely person but I never had any maternal feelings," she told The Sun. "Neither did my mother, so that message was constantly fed to me as a child."

Speaking about her regrets, Barbara says of her five abortions: "I know it was wrong, against what you should do.

"My mother never told me about the facts of life. It was ridiculous. I'd make a mistake then go straight on and do it again. I was so naive.

"I'm the generation where you kept your feelings to yourself, so I always made out everything was fine.

"But I went through a lot of mental stress. I thought a lot about God and what he would think of me."

Babs will air on Sunday, May 7 at 8pm on BBC One.
