Barbra Streisand has weighed in on the remake of A Star Is Born, throwing shade at the movie’s stars – including Lady Gaga.

Streisand starred in the 1976 version of the film alongside Kris Kristofferson. The film was originally made in 1937 with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March playing an aspiring actor and a Hollywood veteran. It was remade as a musical in 1954 starring Judy Garland and James Mason.

In an interview with The Sunday Project, Streisand spoke about her career and her opinions on the latest iteration of A Star Is Born, starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. She even talked about how “interesting” it would have been if Beyoncé and Will Smith had appeared in the film’s leading roles.

“At first, when I heard it was going to be done again, it was supposed to be Will Smith and Beyoncé, and I thought, ‘That’s interesting’,” Streisand recalled.

She continued: “Really make it different again, different kind of music, integrated actors, I thought that was a great idea.

“So I was surprised when I saw how alike it was to the version that I did in 1976.”

The host of the Australian TV programme replied that the similarities between the Streisand and Lady Gaga versions were “probably a compliment to you”, which Streisand seemingly shrugged off.

“I thought it was the wrong idea,” Streisand said.

Streisand went on to say that she “thought it was the wrong idea” for the remake but that she “can’t argue with success” after it grossed $436m worldwide and earned Lady Gaga an Oscar win for Best Original Song.

But she added: “I don’t care so much about success as I do originality.”

In 2018, Cooper told Entertainment Weekly that Streisand came to visit the movie set and gave the cast “a blessing”.

“Everybody was so excited she was there,” Cooper said. “We just looked at each other and were like ‘Wow. How are we here right now?'”

“She was so, so kind,” Lady Gaga added.
