New Barcelona kit: Are Barca about to swap their stripes for checked shirts?

Are Barcelona about to embark on a new, checked, chapter in their history? Quite possibly.

Reports in Spain claim that their next home strip will see Barca lose their infamous red and blue stripes in favour of a chequered design.

An image circulating on social media shows a mock-up of the new Nike shirt, equipped with shirt sponsors Rakuten and Beko, with a chequered front topped with blue sleeves and collar.

Spanish publication Sport report that production of the new shirt will begin shortly after receiving the thumbs up from the club’s top brass.

News of this apparent change in apparel has angered some Barcelona fans, but it is not the first time that Catalan giants have changed their stripes.

Their centenary shirt for the 1998-99 campaign saw the club opt for a half-and-half design, which was repeated again during Pep Guardiola’s first season in charge ten years later.

For the 2015-16 campaign, Barca flips the stripes to horizontal hoops.
