Theresa May condemns Barcelona terror attack that left at least 13 people dead in Las Ramblas

Theresa May has said her thoughts are with the victims of the “terrible attack” that left at least 13 people dead in Barcelona.

The Prime Minister said the UK “stands with Spain against terror” after a van ploughed into crowds in the busy street of Las Ramblas.

Mrs May joined other world leaders who reacted to the horrifying events that unfolded in the Spanish city on Thursday afternoon.

In statement, she said: “My thoughts are with the victims of today’s terrible attack in Barcelona and the emergency services responding to this ongoing incident.

“The UK stands with Spain against terror."

Responding to the attack, her Conservative colleague and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson expressed his concern over the attack.

He wrote on Twitter: "Concerned and saddened by Barcelona attack. Our thoughts are with those affected.

“Doing all we can to identify whether Brits need help."

Donald Trump said the US will do “whatever is necessary to help”, telling the country: "Be tough & strong, we love you!"

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said the capital stands with the Spanish city “against the evil of terrorism” and praised emergency services working at the scene.

At least 15 of the injured victims are believed to be in a serious condition after the van mounted the pavement and swerved into a busy pedestrian area, a spokesman added.

Two suspects have been arrested over the incident which is being treated as a terror attack.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the violence.
