Former Aston Villa winger Jaden Philogene could be the fall-back option for Barcelona in this summer transfer window, if they are unable to lure Nico Williams away from Athletic Bilbao. Philogene joined Hull City from Villa for around £5m last summer and he excelled in the Tigers side under Liam Rosenior, which finished seventh in the Championship.

Philogene, 22, took the league by storm and scored 12 times and contributed six assists in just 32 league appearances, including a goal against Rotherham United which could become a Puskas Award contender. He has two more years remaining on his contract at the MKM Stadium, with the option of another.

Villa might've had the option to bring him back to Villa Park this summer; had the Tigers secured promotion via the play-offs, which they missed out on on the final day of the season in May, the Lions had an option to buy back Philogene once the two clubs were in the same division, although that prospective move a year from now might not be an option - unless Villa revisited a deal themselves this window.

That's if Barca decide to pursue a move for Philogene, who joined Villa's academy from the Pro:Direct Academy in London in 2018. After interest from PSG, Borussia Dortmund and Barca, he signed his first professional contract at Villa in 2019 and went on to have loans at Stoke City and Cardiff City.

The England under 21 international reportedly has attracted the interest of Barca, now, as a potential alternative if they fail to secure a deal with Bilbao this summer for Spanish international Williams; the winger, out in Germany with his country for the Euros, only signed a new contract with Bilbao in December, a deal which runs until 2027. He recently confirmed he was very happy at Bilbao, where he plays with his elder brother Inaki.

Spanish outlet Relevo claim that Barca like Philogene and consider him to be their plan B in the event that the Williams pursuit fails, but that they may have to clear a hurdle with Villa depending on the contents of the contract he signed with Hull when moving north last season.
