Barclays has urged customers to "DM" the bank over social media - after customers were told they cannot switch for joint accounts online. Customers have been ordered to "visit" a branch and "go into" a Barclays bank physically if they wish to.

Taking to Twitter, now X, one customer Andrew said: "Hi @BarclaysUK Can you please explain why, in 2024, I cannot do a current account switch for a joint account online? I rang and was told I need to go INTO branch, and the earliest available appointment in Ipswich is 16th October?! Are you still running on fax?"

The customer said it "wasn't a great experience". Barclays replied: "Hiya Andrew. Thanks for reaching out. Hope you're well. Ah so there is a different process we use when switching joint accounts and you're right this does need to be done in branch. If you'd like us to check to see if there is an earlier appointment, pop over to DM 1/2

"and we'll be happy to check this for you! Alternatively, if you require any additional support you can find other ways to reach out to us here." On its website, the bank explains: "We’re receiving a high number of calls at the moment, which means it might take longer than we'd like for you to get through.

"To help us support those who are in most urgent need, please check if our help centre has the information you need before calling us. We know waiting to get through can be frustrating, and we're trying to help people as quickly as we can.

"Thanks for your patience and understanding." It says: "alk to us directly through social channels too. All of our genuine accounts have a verified tick or badge. We’ll never ask for your Telephone or Online Banking passcodes, PINs (including PINsentry) or card details.

"Please be aware of accounts imitating us under other names, or without our verified tick."
