The UK’s biggest credit card provider has extended payments after a huge Barclays outage. Barclaycard, which issues cards to Barclays, confirmed the move to The Sun newspaper but said the issue reported over the weekend had been resolved.

Barclays has said all payments are now being processed as normal. "Customers can use our app, bank online, call us, use their cards and withdraw cash," a spokesperson said. "We are working on bringing balances up to date for some of our customers and addressing any outstanding issues.

Barclaycard has given customers an extra two days to make payments following last week's Barclays outage. Barclays said: "We are very sorry for any disruption and will ensure that no impacted customer is left out of pocket.

"Our call centres and branches are open and we will be proactively contacting customers who may be vulnerable." Barclays admitted that the fault – which led to problems with payments and some customers even reporting that house moves had fallen through – was a “technical issue” rather than due to a cyber-attack or any malicious activity.

The effect of the outage was compounded by it starting on the day of the HM Revenue and Customs deadline for self-assessment taxpayers to submit their returns. A number of frustrated customers have attempted to reach out to Barclays support via social media - some of the bank's responses have drawn criticism.

On X, the bank apologised to many, but also advised some customers facing difficulties accessing their money to seek support from friends and family and to get in touch with food banks.

Barclays customer Diane Forrest in Teddington, London, said she was supposed to complete the sale on a house on Friday. "I sat outside the new house with all belongings in a removal truck for over four hours but no alternative solution could be found," she told the BBC.
