A brazen bare-chested burglar was caught red-handed in a victim's home while his mother was visiting.

Gary Low sneaked into a flat in Byker, Newcastle, gathering up electronic valuables to steal. When he was apprehended in the act by the victim, he tried to use the T shirt he was holding to conceal his face.

Newcastle Crown Court heard he then put the haul down and left and went to sit on a wall outside with others. Police were called and Low was identified from CCTV.

It was around 6.30pm on September 4 last year that the victim was at home in a ground floor flat in Gordon Road, Byker, Newcastle. His mother was visiting him and they became aware of an intruder in the home.

They saw Low had gathered together valuables, including a TV and Xbox controller and when confronted, he put them down. He then left and was seen to go and sit on a wall with other people on Raby Street.

The 38-year-old, of Burnhils Gardens, Greenside, Gateshead, who has 62 previous convictions, pleaded guilty to burglary. He was jailed for 21 months.

Rachel Hedworth, defending, said: "Fortunately it was a relatively short-lived incident and he left immediately." She added that he had a difficult upbringing and now has a job offer.
