Bargain Hunt guests left reeling after losing out following expert's costly mistake

A mother and daughter duo on Bargain Hunt were left stunned after an expert's challenge item caused their profits to plummet.

The episode, which aired on Thursday, September 5, saw teams racing to find the best bargains at flea markets to sell at auction. The red team, made up of mum Trudi and her daughter Anna, were in high spirits from the start. Anna quipped: "You're the mother, so you're in charge."

Antiques expert Phil Serrell was assigned to help Trudi and Anna, while the blue team, husband and wife Mick and Marian, were paired with Roo Irvine. Both teams got off to a great start, with the blue team securing their first purchase just 10 minutes into the show.

The snapped up two identical greyhound statues that fit the challenge set by host Charlie Ross to find an item that "could be used in a garden". With Roo's help, Marian managed to haggle the price down to just £75 for both statues.

For the red team, it wasn't an immediate hit, but they eventually spotted a lawn edger that piqued their interest. Phil took the reins in haggling, confidently offering £30 for it, which was promptly accepted by the vendor, reports the Express.

Trudi and Anna were unstoppable after that, bagging two green log bins for £75 and splashing out £90 on a Grecian-style urn. Despite pouring so much into their haul, the auctioneer seemed underwhelmed, remarking to presenter Charlie: "I'll have to do my work to get them out of trouble."

Yet, the auction results told another tale, as each item fetched more than its purchase price. Against all odds, Trudi and Anna beamed with satisfaction, having turned a neat £67 profit.

But, the moment of truth arrived when they were presented with the expert's choice of the day a Buddha statue which Charlie had valued at £40. Caught in two minds about whether to risk adding to their gains, the pair deliberated over the expert's find.

Anna believed they could increase their profit margin by a tenner, while Trudi hedged her bets on breaking even. In the end, putting their faith in Charlie's expertise and sensing no risk of loss, they decided to throw the Buddha into the auction mix.

The gamble, however, bore no fruit as the Buddha stirred little interest amongst the bidders, both online and in the auction room. The auctioneer struggled to garner interest, and despite Trudi and Anna's vehement head-shaking, the stone ornament was sold for a mere £28, falling £12 short of their investment.

The pair didn't say much but appeared distinctly unimpressed as they gestured in resignation, uttering "nevermind" upon seeing their profit dip to £55 following the Buddha sale.

The advantage had decisively shifted to the blue team. Mirroring the red team's earlier success, they too enjoyed profitable bids on all their items. They concluded with an impressive £105 profit, edging out Trudi and Anna for the win.
