Bargate junction project main works are now complete
Council works at a major road junction in the centre of Grimsby are now almost complete.
Since July 15, improvement works have been taking place to the junction of Bargate/Dudley Street and Deansgate/Church Lane, and Deansgate Bridge as well. The works were to prevent serious problems in the busy area in the future, and to make it safer for pedestrians and motorists.
It had been due to conclude in late October. But it was delayed by a few weeks, with bad weather, supply problems, and longer than advised utility works, cited as causing this.
By Tuesday, November 19, all works had been completed, save for to Deansgate Bridge. This will not, however, require traffic lane disruption.
A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said: "The main elements of the works to Bargate and Church Lane Junctions have now been completed, with the improvements to the junctions and new traffic lights installed. "This has meant the traffic management was removed from site on Monday.
"There are some works remaining to be completed on the parapet of Deansgate bridge, which will be carried out on the outside of the bridge and not require traffic management. The council and its delivery partner, Equans, would like to take this opportunity to thank the public for their patience while these improvement works have been undertaken, making the junction more accessible and safer for everyone to use in the future."
Improvements include new push button-operated pedestrian crossings at the Bargate junction, and an island created to produce a staggered crossing. All traffic signals have also been replaced.
The council had stated to underline the need for the works that the previous signals were 37-years-old - way above the manufacturer's recommended lifespan of 15 years. Increasing traffic signal faults had been reported, but because of their age, replacement parts were no longer available.
Council-contracted works took place over the last four months, mostly with temporary traffic lights in operation and only overnight road closures near the end. Hessle-based CR Reynolds Ltd were awarded by the council and Equans the £637,000 contract in December 2023.
Motorists will also recall works with temporary traffic lights at the Bargate junction in spring. These were carried out by Cadent Gas, BT Openreach and Northern Powergrid on their respective utility infrastructure as part of preparation for the later junction works.
