Smoke could be seen for miles across London as dozens of firefighters tackled a huge blaze at an industrial estate in Barking.
London Fire Brigade said it had sent 30 firefighters to the scene after it was called shortly before 1pm on Tuesday to reports of the flames.
It added that around 30 tonnes of mixed refuse is alight at the scene on River Road.
Images circulated online showed huge plumes of smoke billowing into the air as emergency services rushed to the scene.
The smoke was visible for miles after the blaze broke out.
A picture posted on Twitter by Daniel Brackley showed a thick black cloud with flames visible at the bottom.
While another - taken from across the river - showed a large pile of waste on fire.
Honor Rhodes shared a picture of the black plume from Ilford, writing: "Smoke over the river today view south from Ilford, hope everyone is ok."
A nearby industrial firm tweeted claiming the fire broke out at McGraths, a waste management company.
It wrote: "Our neighbours at McGraths are on fire - we are still open to our customers - we hope everyone involved comes out safe."
London Fire said in a statement: "Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers have been called to a fire at an industrial estate in River Road, Barking.
"Approximately 30 tonnes of mixed refuse is alight.
"The Brigade was called at 12.59pm.
"Fire crews from Homerton, East Ham, Dagenham, Plaistow and Ilford fire stations are at the scene."
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
Road closures are in place on River Road and drivers are urged to avoid the area.
