While another - taken from across the river - showed a large pile of waste on fire.

Honor Rhodes shared a picture of the black plume from Ilford, writing: "Smoke over the river today view south from Ilford, hope everyone is ok."

A nearby industrial firm tweeted claiming the fire broke out at McGraths, a waste management company.

It wrote: "Our neighbours at McGraths are on fire - we are still open to our customers - we hope everyone involved comes out safe."

London Fire said in a statement: "Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers have been called to a fire at an industrial estate in River Road, Barking.
