Barry George – who was wrongly convicted over the murder of BBC star Jill Dando – has told how he had a gun pressed to his head and was told “watch your back”.

Mr George told the Mirror that he is still living in fear after being threatened shortly after he was cleared of killing the Crimewatch presenter.

The 58-year-old was convicted in 2001 of the murder of Jill Dando – who was shot dead on the doorstep of her home in Fulham in 1999 – then later acquitted at a retrial in 2008.

But he told the Mirror that he does “not feel free” and is “looking over my shoulder”.

Mr George said he had reported the threat, which he suspected was made by someone linked to the murder, to police but felt they were giving him “lip service” and nothing happened.

He spent the day with the Mirror in Fulham, West London, where he lived at the time of Ms Dando’s death.

Mr George, who moved to Ireland, said being denied compensation for his wrongful conviction meant he had never been truly exonerated and still fears what could happen to him on his visits to Britain.

He said: “I do not feel free. I think about this case every single day.

“I live looking over my shoulder. Nobody should have to live like that,” he added, and went on: “Ten years after being acquitted and I’m still trying to get away from it.

“Me and my family have not been exonerated for this crime and we have not got closure… I was acquitted but I’m serving a life sentence for a crime I did not commit.”
