Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

Aug 28 (The Sports Xchange) - New York Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka, who is trying to work his way back from a partially torn UCL in his right elbow, threw 49 pitches in a simulated game and reported no issues Thursday. The Yankees are optimistic that Tanaka can return to help them in the pennant race in September. Instead of opting for Tommy John surgery, Tanaka decided to rehab his elbow. - - Outfielder Nolan Reimold is headed to his third team this year after the Arizona Diamondbacks claimed him off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. Reimold started the season with the Baltimore Orioles and was on the disabled list after surgery on a herniated disk in his neck before he was designated for assignment on July 1. - - The Baltimore Orioles recalled infielder Jimmy Paredes from Triple-A Norfolk. He was hitting .258 in 32 games playing both second and third with Norfolk since Baltimore got him from the Royals on July 24. Paredes gives the Orioles some extra depth on the bench and fills the spot of right-hander Kevin Gausman, sent out in a roster shuffle move Wednesday night. - - Texas Rangers outfielder Shin-Soo Choo will have surgery on Friday to remove a bone spur in his left elbow. He is expected to be able to return to baseball activities by Nov. 1. Choo was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Aug. 25 (retroactive to Aug. 24) after hitting .242/.340/.374 with 13 home runs and 40 RBIs in his first season with Texas. - - Colorado Rockies left-hander Jorge De La Rosa threw long toss in the outfield before the game and informed manager Walt Weiss he is ready to make his next start Sunday at Arizona. De La Rosa had to be pulled from Tuesday's 3-0 loss to the Giants after jamming his left (pitching hand) thumb while batting. - - San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford disclosed before the game that soreness in his right (throwing arm) shoulder helped lead to two throwing errors in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Rockies. Crawford was not in the Giants' starting lineup for a second consecutive game. - - Injured Atlanta Braves left-hander Jonny Venters has been diagnosed with another tear of the UCL in his left elbow. It is the third tear for Venters, whose first two tears were repaired during Tommy John surgeries in October 2005 and May 2013. He hasn't pitched in the majors since October 2012. - - The Cincinnati Reds optioned right-hander Daniel Corcino to Triple-A Louisville to make room on the roster for Thursday's starting pitcher, right-hander Dylan Axelrod. Corcino logged two strikeouts in his only inning of work since being recalled from Double-A Pensacola on Aug. 22. - - Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo missed his second consecutive start after leaving Tuesday's game in the eighth inning with lower back tightness. He remains day-to-day, but manager Rick Renteria was hoping Rizzo would be ready for Friday's opener of Chicago's four-game series at St. Louis. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
