Bath fan says he was 'grabbed round the throat' by Sale Sharks player

An investigation is under way after a Sale Sharks player was allegedly involved in a heated altercation with a Bath fan at the conclusion of Saturday's Premiership Rugby semi-final match. The incident reportedly resulted in the spectator being placed in a headlock.

Jonny Hill, who was not part of the Sale squad, was seated with the Sharks' coaching staff in the stands when it's alleged tempers flared at the end of the intense match. A 28-year-old man, who wished to remain anonymous, said he sustained a cut above his right eye and had his sunglasses broken.

The fan told the Mirror: "I was sat there, and he came down the stairs, grabbed me around the throat, snapped my sunglasses and cut the top of my eye. I don't want to make a big thing. Sale boss Alex Sanderson was pitchside when the flashpoint occurred and did not see the incident.

Alex Sanderson, Sale's boss, was on the pitch when the alleged incident occurred and did not witness it. He said: "It is news to me, Jonny is not the aggressive type and I will answer those questions when I know. I can vouch for Jonny's character, he is not an overly aggressive spiteful person." Hill has 13 caps for England, while it's claimed Sale defence coach Paul Deacon was heard apologising to the supporter after the fracas.

A Sale statement said: "Sale Sharks are aware of an incident involving a player and Bath Rugby fan at the final whistle of today's Semi-Final. The club will work with Bath Rugby to complete an investigation into the incident and will provide no further comment at this time."

On the pitch, Bath Rugby held their nerve to beat Sale Sharks 31-22 in the play-off semi-final at the Recreation Ground on Saturday to book their place in the final at Twickenham next weekend against Northampton Saints.
