Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes was left to rue mistakes and missed opportunities as Real Madrid departed Germany with a 2-1 Champions League advantage in the first leg of their semi-final tie.

Real Madrid's bid for a third straight Champions League title remained on course after a come-from-behind win in Munich on Wednesday night.

Two high quality opponents produced numerous uncharacteristic errors, with Joshua Kimmich beating Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas at his near post to give Bayern the lead.

Marcelo equalised after 44 minutes, after Bayern had lost winger Arjen Robben and defender Jerome Boateng to injury.

And half-time substitute Marco Asensio struck after 57 minutes, capitalising on Rafinha's sloppy pass, to give Zinedine Zidane's men the advantage ahead of next week's second leg at the Bernabeu.

Real's sixth consecutive win over Bayern means the German champions must score at least twice and overcome the away goals advantage to have any hope of denying Zinedine Zidane's 12-time European champions progress to next month's final in Kiev.

"It was a curious game," Bayern coach Heynckes said. "We gifted Madrid two goals through our mistakes.

"We had really good chances and we did not use them. One should not be surprised that we lost.

"When you have that many chances and you don't score then you cannot win."

Heynckes continued: "We want to do whatever it takes to put this result right next week. It's our duty.

"The semi-finals are two legs so we need to see what happens after two games. We didn't deserve to lose today, so I'm confident.

"We had so many chances, it was strange. I've never seen us have so many chances in a semi-final, especially against a team like Real Madrid.

"We simply weren't clinical enough and we gifted Real their goals."

Perhaps mindful of the slim advantage Real hold after an underwhelming display in Germany, Zidane said: "We are satisfied with the result but this does not count for much.

"You can never feel absolutely safe in football.

"We won tonight and I think we played well, we got a good result after a hard game."
