A woman was left speechless after discovering an "old bag of trinkets" left by her late husband on top of a wardrobe contained a brooch worth a five figure sum.

Tonight, the BBC showed a repeat of a classic episode of Antiques Roadshow, with the scheduled episode, which was filmed in Enfield, London, making way for a Roadshow filmed in Nymans Gardens in Sussex. The episode featured a rare diver's watch and an axe used in a 1922 Everest expedition valued at £5,000.

But it was the final guest who came up with the most memorable item - an antique brooch made in Sri Lanka. The guest revealed her late husband was a big collector of "anything trinkety". She brought along two of his brooches to the roadshow, hoping to find out their provenance. She suspected they might be costume jewellery or made of glass.

She said: "He just had this bag on his wardrobe [where he put the trinkets] and in his tobacco tin. I just thought they're not worth anything."

Expert Joanna Hardy was blown away by what the woman showed her. She told the guest: "I'm very pleased you came today. In fact I am more than pleased. I am absolutely gobsmacked."

Joanna went on to reveal that one of the brooches was an "absolutely superb" 12 carat sapphire, set in diamonds.

She continued: "The colour and the cut of it - it absolutely popped out at me. This is a wonderful stone. It has a lot of life and a lot of fire."

The expert's valuation was eye-popping. She said: "I think at auction you'd be looking at around £15,000."

The valuation left the guest momentarily speechless, before she gathered herself together. She said: "I'm glad I've come!"

Following Joanna's suggestion that she turn the brooch into a ring, the woman shook her head, saying, "I'd be too frightened to wear it."
