BBC apologises after radio show broadcasts ‘sick’ Ian Brady playlist quiz

The BBC was forced to apologise after one of its radio shows broadcast a playlist quiz that was inspired by Ian Brady.

The segment, in which listeners were asked to guess the identify of a mystery person who had been in the news based on the titles of four chosen songs, was branded ‘sick’ and ‘crass’ on social media when the answer turned out to be the Moors Murderer.

Brady died last week aged 79 after more than five decades behind bars.

He and Myra Hindley, who died in 2002, murdered five young people between 1963 and 1965, burying their remains on Saddleworth Moor near Manchester.

During Sunday’s breakfast show on BBC Radio Leeds, stand-in DJ Nathan Turvey, who was filling in for the regular presenter, ran the controversial quiz.

He asked listeners to guess the mystery person after listening to snippets of four songs as clues.

The DJ played sections of Mott The Hoople’s All The Young Dudes and The Brady Bunch theme song, followed by The Smiths’ Suffer Little Children, which was written about the Moors murders.

The final song played was Psycho Killer by Talking Heads.

The controversial clip was later posted on Radiofail, a website featuring mistakes by DJs.

After playing the tracks, Turvey can be heard saying: ‘They were four songs all linked to someone in the news this week, all you’ve got to do is work out who it is.’

A BBC spokesman said: ‘This was clearly unacceptable and we apologise.’
