BBC Bargain Hunt's Roo Irvine consoles guest after auction flop

Bargain Hunt's Roo Irvine expressed her sympathies to the Blue team with an apologetic "I'm so sorry," during Wednesday's (September 4) episode.

The BBC presenter was gutted for contestants Ruth and David, who had invested heavily in several striking items that were tipped for success at auction but unfortunately didn't attract any bids from the Irish crowd present that day.

Ruth and David had nearly exhausted their £300 budget on their chosen antiques, leaving only £15 for their expert of the day, Thomas Forrestor, to pick out something he believed could turn a profit.

Despite having selected a silver pocket mirror among other pieces, none of their items seemed to appeal to the bidders, even though the auctioneer had previously told host Roo he "liked" some of their finds.

Roo lamented: "Blues I am so sorry, you've got some beautiful items. That sold for £50, you lost £110, it's taken you from minus £10 to minus £120. I'm so sorry, you were so close to profit but it's not over yet," clearly sharing in their disappointment, reports the Express.

Hoping to end on an upbeat note, Roo said: "Here comes the cavalry in the form of Thomas Forrestor." She explained: "Now, you left him a whopping £15 but he can't lose more than £15 for his bonus buy."

The host excitedly told David and Ruth: "Keep your eyes closed, nice and tight, Thomas over to you," as their auction expert unveiled his find. At that point, David and Ruth had found themselves in a spot of bother with a £120 deficit, after a disappointing £110 loss on an eye-catching pocket mirror.

All eyes were then on Thomas, their trusty expert, who was tasked with the mission to turn around their fortunes. He didn't disappoint, revealing a charming miniature blue vase adorned with all the right marks, a real steal at the modest £15 he spent from their budget.

The petite porcelain treasure turned out to be quite the find, sending waves of interest through the auction room. Thomas' shrewd buy paid off handsomely, bagging the Blue team a £70 profit on their initial heavy loss, reducing their shortfall to just £50.

Despite the Blue's valiant effort, it wasn't quite enough to trounce the Red team, who, while not exactly hitting the jackpot in Wednesday's programme, still managed to clinch victory with a less severe deficit of £7.

The Reds, comprising Raymond and Linda, hadn't fared much better with their riskier items, which resulted in a significant dent in their funds. Fortune smiled upon Linda, however, with her keen eye spotting a unique brass artefact and tea set, nabbing them for a steal.

Before the gavel came down, the auctioneer gave Roo a candid opinion, expressing his distaste for her chosen lots. Despite his reservations, they were low-cost and ultimately did contribute to clawing back some of their losses which helped secure their lead come auction day.

Bargain Hunt airs on BBC One, weekdays, from 12:15 and can be streamed via iPlayer.
