BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay baffled as he admits 'I can't believe this' over 'extraordinary' item

BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay was left scratching his head in disbelief during Monday's programme.

In the latest broadcast, viewers were treated to a segment about extravagant advent calendars, with some tagged at an eye-watering £640.

Jon, 54, couldn't hide his astonishment at the idea of spending such amounts, with his co-host Sally Nugent noting: "Jon can barely look, look at Jon's face" leading him to exclaim: "I can't believe this! I cannot believe this, people saying they pay £40 even just seems an extraordinary amount of money."

In a lighthearted moment, Jon joked: "I just told Sally I'll make her one just like you used to make in the old days" to which Sally, 53, humorously hit back saying: "I already know, I'm going to get you the beard grooming one."

But the concept of a beard grooming advent calendar only added to Jon's bewilderment as he quipped: "I have to do that for 24 days? How much beard grooming can you take!" He added he had a series of questions but pointed out he has 100 days until Christmas to find out the answers, reports the Express.

Viewers also shared their confusion over the segment. Echoing the sentiment on social media, BBC Breakfast tweeted: "Would you spend hundreds of pounds on a luxury advent calendar? On #BBCBreakfast with exactly 100 days until Christmas, Nina has been looking at their popularity."

Viewers were quick to express their surprise and preferences, as one noted: "No way!" Another user shared a nostalgic sentiment: "I love the advent calendars with just the old fashioned pictures behind the windows, my wife buys me one every year for my birthday on the 1st Dec and she says they are getting really hard to find these days" Meanwhile, someone else could hardly believe the early festive spirit, adding: "It's September....."

Meanwhile, Jon experienced what he described as the 'proudest moment' of his life during last Monday's show. Reflecting on their weekend, Jon shared that he had participated in the local village show's baking competition, showcasing his cheese and onion pasties.

Images of Jon's culinary work surprised co-presenter Sally who couldn't hide her astonishment, exclaiming: "You made that?" to which Jon proudly confirmed: "I made it!" He then teased: "You might be able to spot a rosette in the bottom left of the picture, Sally..."

Sally, playing along, quipped: "Jon, look at you!" There was further excitement when Jon prodded: "What's the number on the rosette?" Sally, with tongue-in-cheek sarcasm, questioned: "Did you win?" to which Jon proudly replied: "I won it!"

Sally continued with excitement: "You won first prize in a baking competition!" with Jon elaborating on the event by saying: "Contrary to my children's speculation there were other people taking part in it, I think there were about 10, maybe 12?" A photograph showcased Jon beaming with his culinary creation, prompting Sally to make a playful remark that he appeared to be in 'disguise'.

Jon highlighted a particular detail, noting the absence of bite marks on the dish and questioning if any of the judges actually sampled it since it had only been cut open. He shared his elation about the achievement, saying: "Proudest moment of my weekend, my life probably!" and then playfully nudged Sally with: "A little praise would be nice!"

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am on BBC One and iPlayer.
