Radio 3 listeners will soon be able to escape the ‘frenzy of everyday life’ with the sounds of zoo animals going to sleep.

The ‘slow radio’ drive will attempt to place listeners into a state of ‘quiet mindfulness’ with the sounds of lions, llamas and monkeys at dusk.

Radio 3 controller Alan Davey said of the broadcast: ‘You’ll hear the sounds of lions going to sleep.

‘Dusk is an exciting time for noises in zoos – as it is in most places.’

He added: ‘We feel strongly about offering the public a mindful experience, a place, a haven, where they can lose themselves in audio.’

The monthly slow radio slot will also see the recording of clocks and other timepieces in Upton House in Warwickshire, while the sounds of cattle being driven to pasture in County Galway will also feature.

The station will also present another three-hour walk from the Black Forest in Germany on Christmas Eve.

Radio 3 has previously broadcasted the chanting of Benedictine monks and the soft trudges of a walker travelling 200 miles through the countryside as part of their venture into slow radio.

The new slow radio slot was one of a raft of announcements made by the broadcaster, including the launch of the first-ever voice-activated version of a Radio 3 programme.

An adaptation of BS Johnson’s 1969 novel The Unfortunates by Graham White, starring Martin Freeman, has been re-cut for Amazon’s home assistant Alexa.

The novel was designed to be read in a random order and the new interactive voice version of the radio play will build on that idea, changing the order every time someone listens.
