Call the Midwife is back for the third episode of its fourteenth series tonight. The latest episode is set to air on BBC One at 8pm tonight and Jenny Agutter OBE will continue to star as Sister Julienne in the much-loved BBC One drama.

Jenny Agutter has starred as Sister Julienne since the first series of Call the Midwife. The character is the Sister-in-Charge of Nonnatus House and often helps other Sisters and nurses through the challenges they face.

Away from the period drama, Jenny Agutter has starred in other popular television shows and films. The 72-year-old actress was born in Taunton on December 20, 1952 and started her acting career when she was a child.

Jenny has appeared in several films including Child's Play 2, An American Werewolf in London and Walkabout. Her most recent film credits include World Security Council Member Hawley in both Captain America – The Winter Soldier and Avengers Assemble.

She told Good Housekeeping UK in 2023: “When I was asked to do the Marvel film Captain America: The Winter Soldier, I couldn’t think of anything better than stepping out of Call The Midwife to work with a stunt team and beat up Robert Redford.

“Although admittedly, they wouldn’t let me stunt-punch him. They were worried I’d actually hit him, instead of missing him.”

The actress, who was a teenager when she filmed The Railway Children in 1970, reprised her role in The Railway Children Return in 2022. She has also starred in television shows including Spooks, Red Dwarf and The Invisibles.

Speaking to Good Housekeeping UK, Jenny said she previously felt a little “guilt” for “spending too much time away” from her family and children during her career. She said: “When my father was dying, it was very different to when I lost my mother many years earlier. I was much less concerned with making plans and more focused on just being with him – and that was a very good thing. Now, it’s about turning off the switch every so often. I’ll go, ‘OK, you can’t plan this out completely. Just do what you have to do’.”

Jenny met husband Swedish hotelier Johan Tham in 1989 at an arts festival. The couple married in August 1990 and their son Jonathan was born in the following December.

The actress told the Daily Mail in 2022: “One of the things about meeting people and forming relationships as an actor is that others have an idea of who you are before they meet you. That's hard in any relationship, particularly with men.

“When Johan and I met I did not feel he had any sense of who I was at all, but he wanted to find out, and that made a big difference. I'm still finding out about him 31 years on.”
