Call the Midwife favourite Miriam Margolyes has bid farewell to the series. The veteran actress, known for her candid love for the acclaimed BBC drama, has taken the decision to depart from her portrayal of Mother Mildred.

Miriam has been absent from the role since 2021 and has now made the definitive choice to leave the show. Fans had previously been speculating about her return and possible exit, reports the Mirror.

A source told the Daily Star, "Miriam loved being part of the show because she absolutely adores it. But she is too busy to play Mother Mildred now so there are no plans for her to go back."

Miriam Margolyes has also expressed her affection for Call the Midwife, explaining to the Mirror her thoughts on its widespread appeal. She said: "It's about decent people doing decent things and that's rather rare on TV these days.

"It's wholesome but that doesn't mean it's dull - it's gripping. But when you see a programme about caring, about love and people looking after each other, it feeds the soul.",

News of Miriam's exit comes as the beloved period drama has confirmed the start of production for a fresh series. Celebratory moments were recently shared by the BBC shows Instagram, which posted an endearing photo of actor Stephen McGann, who plays Dr Turner, attending the wedding of his son Dominic alongside Max Macmillan, who portrays Dr Turner's son Timothy in the series.

The caption said: "We are now all back filming series 14 after our customary summer break. It was our annual leave for the CTM team in the middle of the long year's filming, to allow us to see family and friends, book a holiday, and generally let our hair down! ".

"For Stephen McGann (Dr Turner), there was no time for a holiday. He and his partner Heidi Thomas (Writer and Executive Producer) had something rather special to take care of their son Dominic's wedding. It was a wonderful occasion by all accounts, and our Call the Midwife partied the night away after the ceremony."
