BBC Call the Midwife star Miriam Margolyes has quit the show. The much-loved actress has decided to step back from the popular series.

A source told the Daily Star: "Miriam loved being part of the show because she absolutely adores it. But she is too busy to play Mother Mildred now so there are no plans for her to go back."

Harry Potter star Margolyes previously revealed why she thinks Call the Midwife is so successful, Mirror reports. She said: "It's about decent people doing decent things and that's rather rare on TV these days.

"It's wholesome but that doesn't mean it's dull - it's gripping. But when you see a programme about caring, about love and people looking after each other, it feeds the soul."

Her departure comes after Call the Midwife confirmed filming had begun for the new series. On the BBC show's Instagram account, a sweet snap of Dr Turner star Stephen McGann at his son Dominic's wedding with on-screen son Timothy star Max Macmillan was shared.

The caption read: "We are now all back filming series 14 after our customary summer break. It was our annual leave for the CTM team in the middle of the long year's filming, to allow us to see family and friends, book a holiday, and generally let our hair down!

"For Stephen McGann (Dr Turner), there was no time for a holiday. He and his partner Heidi Thomas (Writer & Executive Producer) had something rather special to take care of their son Dominic's wedding!

"It was a wonderful occasion by all accounts, and our Call the Midwife partied the night away after the ceremony! But we were amused to receive this particular photograph Stephen sent us from the after-party, because - for those familiar with our previous Call the Midwife posts - it marks a moment that has been 14 long years in the making! It is the moment when Stephen's real son FINALLY met Max Macmillan, the actor who plays his screen son Timothy!"
