Comedian, writer and TV presenter Mel Giedroyc has has become a beloved figure on our screens. However, she previously confessed that life isn't always filled with laughter, particularly when dealing with menopause.

The 56-year-old, who rose to fame alongside comedy partner Sue Perkins on shows like The Great British Bake Off and is back on our screens hosting Children in Need tonight, previously opened up about her struggles. She told the Independent: "I do have a dark side. Only my husband, children, close friends and family ever get to see it.

"I wouldn't say I go into deep dark black dog depression I'm fortunate in that regard, but everyone experiences highs and lows and I always strive to remain optimistic."

Like many people, Mel grapples with everyday issues such as fatigue, stress, and a busy work schedule, which can sometimes cause her to "spiral quite badly".

Mel further discussed how her fluctuating moods have been influenced by the onset of menopause.

She remarked: "I've noticed of late, the old hormonal journey is quite interesting. The old peri-menopausal express has come to town! I'm not in the full hot flush yet, but I very much feel it's coming. I've noticed mood-wise, it gets quite interesting.

"I've been feeling, shall I go to the doctor? No! I don't want to be disturbing the doctor when there's a global pandemic on the go. But I do feel I'm embarking on a roller coaster into the land of menopause. Hoorah!"

Mel humorously shared her early encounters with menopause symptoms, though they touch on more serious matters. She said: "I looked up online the symptoms, causes and effects of the menopause and I've absolutely convinced myself that I've got a fully receding hairline. What does one do? Do you go and have the old Wayne Rooney plugs put in?"

The most frequent symptoms of menopause include:

  • Hot flushes

  • Night sweats

  • Vaginal dryness and discomfort during sex

  • Sleeping difficulties

  • Low mood or anxiety

  • Decreased sex drive (libido)
