The BBC's new drama The Control Room looks like a distressing ride, as seen in the first trailer.

The series, from the producers of Sherlock and Dracula, follows Gabe (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Iain De Caestecker), an ordinary man who works as an emergency call handler for the Strathclyde Ambulance Service in Glasgow.

One day, what seems like yet another emergency call threatens to tear Gabe's life apart.

The handler receives a disturbing life-and-death call from a woman who appears to reveal she has killed someone. As Gabe asks her some questions, she seemingly recognises his voice, saying: "Gabo, is that you?" and thus hinting that the two go way back.

Under pressure, Gabe struggles to figure out who she is and ends up making a rash decision that may have devastating consequences.

As he is questioned by his boss and apparently chased by some mysterious people, the protagonist must confront his past.

Ahead of filming, protagonist De Caestecker said The Control Room is "one of the most exciting scripts" he had ever read.

"I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, so I'm thrilled to now be bringing it to life."

Alongside De Caestecker, The Control Room also stars Joanna Vanderham (seen in Dancing On The Edge, The Go-Between, Man In An Orange Shirt) as Sam, alongside My Mad Fat Diary and Finding Alice star Sharon Rooney, Game of Thrones and Vigil's Daniel Portman, as well as Taj Atwal (The Syndicate, Line of Duty) and Stuart Bowman (Bodyguard, Versailles).

Filmed in Glasgow last year, the series created by Nick Leather is expected to premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in July.
