BBC drama remake filmed in Plymouth as 'fabulous' TV star meets local residents

The star of a hugely popular TV show was seen filming in Plymouth today, Friday, September 27. A reboot of the hit 80s show Bergerac is in the work and its cast visited Plymouth today to film at a Devonport casino.

The remake of Bergerac, a TV drama which aired on the BBC during the 80s, is being rebooted, with actor Damien Molony at the helm. A production company were in Plymouth today filming scenes for the remake.

Some local residents told PlymouthLive Damien Molony took time of filming in the city today to chat to locals in the area. Devonport local, Deborah Wildey-Garcia said: "The fabulous actor Damien Molony took time out of filming to have a photo and chat with some residents of Helen Fox House in Devonport."

Deborah went on to say that Damien stayed to talk to them for 20 minutes, even asking where they were from. Deborah also said that Damien mentioned that it was his first time in Devon and they had been filming in Hope Cove earlier.

She said: "Yes he said its his first time in Devon and had been filming in Hope Cove earlier. He didn't have a car which was a shame he wanted to explore the area.

"He asked where we were from and thanked us for being so kind and letting us film, it should be shown in February. The whole crew were fantastic."

Deborah added that she and other residents were even allowed to watch the filming. She said they all watched a scene where armed police raided the casino.

Deborah said: "Yes all of it, very exciting, watching the armed police raiding the casino 10 times."

Residents on Marlborough Street in Devonport received a notice informing them that filming for the reboot would be taking place at Boosters Casino today.

In a statement given to residents, Blacklight Ltd said: "I am writing to inform you that Blacklight (Drama) Limited are filming a new series of the classic television show, Bergerac. We are planning to film some interior and exterior scenes at Booster's Casino."

A road closure was put in place between 8am and 2pm to allow the crews to film the scenes. As well as filming the Bergerac reboot, filming company Blacklight also produced the Channel 4 series 'On The Edge', a short-film mini-series which has run since 2018.

The reboot of the classic 80s TV drama is due to hit screens in early 2025. Taking up the lead role as Jim Bergerac is Damien Molony known for his roles in Brassic, Crashing and The Split.

Damien will be leading the reboot alongside Zoë Wanamaker as Jim's mother-in-law Charlie Hungerford. Philip Glenister will star as Arthur Wakefield, with Pippa Haywood as Margaret Heaton and Robert Gilbert as Barney Crozier.

The new reboot is based on the original series which starred John Nettles. Unlike the original series from the 80s, the reboot will see one character-led murder mystery run across all six episodes, in place of a new storyline each episode.

It will air on streaming service U (formerly known as UKTV Play) in 2025.
