After the success of the harrowing drama Three Girls earlier this year, a documentary featuring people at the heart of the real story has been announced.

BBC One's three-part drama series depicted the real-life Rochdale abuse case from the perspective of the underage girls who were groomed and sexually exploited by a ring of adult men – a case that would rock the country when it was exposed back in 2012.

Now, The Betrayed Girls will feature the harrowing testimonies of the brave victims, some of whom are speaking out for the first time.

There will also be interviews with the manager of the Rochdale Crisis Intervention Team, Sara Rowbotham, former detective constable Maggie Oliver, and chief prosecutor Nazir Afzal.

The documentary will highlight how so many people let the girls down throughout their ordeal, with many from the police, social services, politics and the Muslim community choosing to look the other way.

Three Girls starred Lesley Sharp (Clocking Off), Maxine Peake (Dinnerladies), Jill Halfpenny (Coronation Street) and Paul Kaye (Game of Thrones), and was applauded by viewers for its gripping dramatisation of the real-life case.
