BBC Gardeners' World transforms historic Devon landmark in tonight's episode

BBC presenter Frances Tophill will arrive at Powderham Castle in Devon for tonight's episode of Gardeners' World. Frances will spend the day at the Castle with her friend Jeanette, who has been transforming part of the walled garden into a productive growing space.

Powderham Castle "is a fortified manor house" located on the banks of the River Exe and six miles south of Exeter. The manor is known for its beautiful surroundings and historic past as it was built in the 14th century by Sir Philip Courtenay.

According to the Castle's site, its rich history extends beyond the original French noble that once lived there but the stories that are told are "one of English history for a millennium." The Castle has seen major building renovations that have seen Tudor, Georgian, and Victorian enhancements but its original form is still recognisable.

Since then Powderham has acted as one of the busiest green-field event sites in the South West. Powderham has opened its gates to host celebrities such as Sir Elton John, Sir Tom Jones, Coldplay and Little Mix, as well as being a venue for Classic Car Shows, Family Adventure Festivals, Sporting Events and more.

The Gardeners' World star will be transforming part of the walled garden by planting raspberries, fruit trees and climbing beans. Frances will also add colour to an ornamental border and share tips for growing herbs in containers.

Gardeners' World was first broadcast on 5 January 1968, marking the 2024 series as the 55th aired. The programme's main presenter is currently Monty Don but frequently spotlights other presenters such as Frances Tophill.

According to the BBC, the episode will also show Toby Buckland exploring the quintessentially English gardens at Wollerton Old Hall in Shropshire, Rekha Mistry at the Inner Temple Gardens in London, and an expert grower in Surrey will demonstrate the wonder and artistry of bonsai.

Gardeners' World airs tonight at 8 pm on BBC Two.
