Gladiators fans were left in shock as as a contestant shared an 'unsuitable' nickname on the family show. The hit reboot, hosted by Bradley Walsh and his son Barney, returned for its second episode of the season on Saturday night (January 25).

But things quickly got off to a bit of a rude start as contestant Joe was asked what his nickname would be if he was a Gladiator. Joe, 40, had a cheeky response.

The driving instructor, from The Wirral, told Bradley: "My brother gave me an idea. He said I'd be called the penatrator."

The comment was met by whistles from the crowd, and stunned viewers at home. A shocked Bradley replied: "Watch it. Yes, having said that and saying it rather well, if you were to be a Gladiator what would your name be?"

Joe then revealed his real answer, telling the host: "You might call me the joker." Viewers at home quickly took to X, formerly Twitter, to comment.

One wrote: "The Penetrator? #Gladiators," adding a meme saying This is a family show. A second said: "“I’ve been called The Penetrator!” Please say less. #Gladiators."

A third commented: "The Penetrator??? Yeah I’m not that’s a suitable Gladiator name mate." A fourth echoed: "The Penetrator ? OOH MATRON!"

And a fifth baffled viewer asked: "#Gladiators The Penetrator and the Joker?" Joe was up first on the show, taking on Bionic in the game Duel, which sees the contestant and Gladiator fighting to knock each off raised platforms. He sadly was knocked off almost straight away.

Gladiators airs on Satuday nights on BBC One. Fans can also catch up on episodes online on BBCiPlayer.
