A concerned Mark Clattenberg brought Saturday's Gladiators to a standstill in order to 'protect' a player, as looked like they might have been forced out of the show due to injury before the first game was even over.

When the hit ITV shows from the 90s relaunched on the BBC last year, North East born official Mark stepped into the very famous shoes of the programme's legendary referee, the late John Anderson; with him overseeing all the battles between the contestants and the Gladiators and the crucial Eliminator at the end of each episode.

Mark was back on duty for the third show of the new series of Gladiators this weekend, taking his position at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield, as four more members of the public bid to make it through their first heat. After being introduced to the crowd and speaking to hosts Bradley and Barney Walsh, the female contenders took on their opening challenge - The Ring - with one of them, Amanda, looking to be in some trouble after being tackled by Gladiator Electro.

BBC commentator Guy Mowbray clocked that something wasn't right in the arena, as Mark then blew his whistle to stop the game as Amanda looked in some pain on the floor, with Guy remarking: "I think and I hope that it's just a touch of cramp." As Amanda's support Mark then went over to her to talk her through her options, telling her: "You've got two choices: you can protect yourself or we can out you back in for 45 seconds, it's entirely your choice."

After Amanda quickly replied: "Let's go," Mark wanted to be 100% sure as he asked: "You're happy to go? You're fit enough to go?" before then making a final check with the medic who rushed into set to check Amanda over, that he was of the opinion she was alright to continue.

Having got the all clear, Amanda ended the game with 12 points, to put her two points of rival Toni who finished on 10, but then went ahead of Amanda having fared better on The Wall.
